February 2005 - Architect Salvatore Bianco e Architect Ivano Fiamma |
International competition of the ideas, promoted by "Domus review" in collaboration with IllyCaffè S.P.A.: "ESPRESSO SPAZIO/TEMPO DEL CAFFE'".
It is possible to consider the bar, where you enjoy your espresso-coffee ritual, a place of knowledge, discovery and contact.
nel tempo di un caffè ..In the time of a coffee
nel tempio di un caffè ......In the temple of a coffee
una "i" che fa la differenza ....An "I" that makes the difference.
The idea of the project comes from the study of this sentence and spelling change (in the Italian language), able to highlight the "espresso coffee ritual", a simple and quick gesture but at the same time a habit rich in its significance and social content. The project started taking into account both the study of the letter "I", in a provocative and desecrating way, and the illy logo designed by Rosenquist, icon of the quality coffee all over the world, also considered the core element and compositional example of the project . Therefore, the letter "I" becomes a new logo, a functional space and a bar accessorize, all at once. The evolution of the idea makes it easy to include the whole components that should distinguish a modern company: recognizability, functionality, brand image and merchandise. The choice of a unique and strong element, functional and formal, which could be utilised in different ways inside the space of the bar, permits an extreme flexibility and personalization of the environment. The same element is changeable; it can be an autonomous and a self-moving cell or could be just a shop window, a counter, or a shelf and even transform itself in a new and a provocative coffee cup. In order to maintain a sort of formal and distinguishing "continuum", the proposal is to provide interchangeable pieces that could be adaptable for any locations suggested by the company. Therefore, without weakening the image of the concept and using the suggested components it is possible to furnish different spatial situation in an extreme freedom, equally adaptable for a "core bar", for a "transit bar" or for a "landscape bar".

The old kiosk has been revised as an autonomous and modular cell able to be a functional container and a representative icon of the company too. Its main feature of being movable makes it easy to place it anywhere, both in a historical city centre and in a terminal of an airport. In addition, technological systems and minimal furniture are inside so that can be perfectly functional in any sort of condition. The opportunity of combine the various options, makes the project very flexible and adaptable to any different kind of practical needs. |
The project, showcase and visual signal too, makes the most from the presence of two distinct elements joined by a single pattern; on the top there is the luminous sign and below there is the square module, also usable as a stand, which set in a frame the window. In the whole, thanks to the translucence of the material and to the use of illuminating elements inside the structure, the concept becomes a totem, highly recognizable in the city.

The design of the counter is made of two placed upon pieces that can contain products and utensils: the higher piece has a drawer while the lower piece is a container for the built-in household appliances. In addition, the counter can be used also like a surface for the consumption of the products, just disposing it rounded of 90 degree and placing some stools around.

The wall cupboard, with a shape that reminds the new logo, enables high flexibility and practical usage. The modules can be b oth horizontally and up right, which permits to mark out the entire environment and to arrange the products too. |
The armchair has a simple shape, an efficient usage and a clear symbology; it is made up of two parts, one is for the back and one is for the part where you sit, furnished with a space that can be used by the customer for their storage needs |

The illy-coffee cup , icon worldwide recognisable, is presented in a new and provocative version: it could be used both with a rectangular shaped saucer and by itself, leaving a space for the sugar and chocolates. The red enamel paint and the white pottery recall the colours of the historical illy logo.
