Freedom : "The Ricci Oddi Art Gallery must reconsider its relationship with the city"
|
|
A brief abstract: Architects Salvatore Bianco and Ivano Fiamma met the director of the S.Siro Museum , Stefano Fugazza, and Architect Massimo Ferrari, lecturer of the Polytechnic of Milan, for the presentation of the design project for the transformation of the " Ricci Oddi Art Gallery ".
Mr Fugazza pointed out the stimulating and futuristic tone of the project. He found the proposal to "develop new tasks and new functions of the museum interesting, together with the traditional ones, as we live in a society where alternative places of socialization have disappeared". Architect Ferrari highlighted how important it is to put it together with the cultural project and architectonic projects of spatial changes. "I strongly agree with the basic idea of considering a museum not just as a gallery, but also in its entirety with what surrounds it," added Mr Ferrari, quoting some samples of courageous projects created in historic contests: the Revolterra Museum in Trieste , by Carlo Scarpa and Leoh Ming's Pyramids in the Louvre Museum . |

The chronicle of Piacenza : "A new dress for the Ricci Oddi" |
|

A brief abstract: The two designers said, "What struck us was the architecture, but especially the building location which is in a strategic point of Piacenza, between the old and the new town." In addition, the two planners paid attention to the city planning of the lot where the gallery is located; the much more interesting cues are those related with the opportunity of new structure accessibility, dynamically related to its location. "We want to give flexibility to such a structure which is now shut and closed as a fortress. From an architectonical point of view, the actual set course for the exhibitions is a kind of a maze, so we tried to make it clearer for the visitors; we placed the exhibition rooms in the spaces around the octagon and designed a semitransparent corridor that leads to each room. Also we wanted to create a new relationship with the external part of the Gallery, providing the museum with flexibility, new technology and facilities: we want to present the whole structure with further vitality." Massimo Ferrari, lecturer of architectonic composition at the Polytechnic of Milan, has been particularly interested in the redevelopment of the garden. The study of the lot in which the art gallery is located, has inspired the architects to design a new set course and new entrances. In this way, a visitor not only can explore all the spaces of the building and admire the architect Arata's structure from the outside but can also attend outdoor musical events and artistic performances organised in the newly designed premises. "This is not an ephemeral architecture," Ferrari declares, "because it is able to solve real problems, like the flexibility of the structures, and to transform twentieth-century style rooms in alternative premises for contemporary artistic exhibitions. Their observations are both actual and indeed interesting."

Description of the project.
The original conformation of "The Ricci Oddi Art Gallery" consists of a service space, which is longitudinal to the building, which culminates at the top in a radial distributive system; this system leads the visitors through the different rooms of the museum. In conformity with the previous designer aim, this type of organization induces to arrange the fitting out of the artistic works in accordance with the "regionalism" flow.
What we have tried to achieve through this project of thesis is to both improve the flexibility of the set course and make it easier for the visitors, also transforming the exhibitions
as the real focus of the museum. In order to do that, we have left the radial rooms unchanged but we have taken the set course of the gallery outdoors, tangentially at the top of the building, establishing a new relation with the lot. The former central set course has been "emptied" and we have created a water route that follows the entire block lengthwise: the route starts from the "Honour Room" and ends in the barycentre of the radial rooms, at a lower dimension. It was possible to get this solution because the "radial" part of the Gallery has been reproduced at the lower level: we have created in the central nucleus and in the rolling axis a double volume in the open air, just like an external.
At the upper level of the Gallery, there are permanent exhibitions and the entire visitor's facilities, as well as two conference rooms, big enough even for school visits: different studies have in fact showed that the individual interests in arts starts from one's earliest years. The lower level has been designed to be suitable for a circuit of contemporary art exhibitions and doubled volume halls have been reserved to function as laboratories: it is possible to look at these two rooms from a platform in a dimension of the upper level.
The two circuits are kept separate from each other: the entrance for the upper level set course is situated on one side of the Gallery, while the entrance for the other level is on the backside or on the last room of the permanent exposition. It is possible in this space to vertically connect the two circuits and get a unique set course: we have finally obtained the desired flexibility. It is possible to enter the lot through both the backside and the frontal side, and just after the "Honour Room" you can see a pitching axis that passes through the building: these two housing projects highlight the connection between the outside and the inside of the Gallery, almost deleting the boundaries between them.
This connection between the outside and the inside of the Gallery is pointed out by the internal double volume, where the water set course is, by the exte
rnal "tunnel" surrounded by a translucid length of cloth, and by the perspectiv
e admirable from the "Honour Room" towards the opposite entrance. The illumination consists of a system of blades assembled on a circular frame able to rotate around its centre. This mechanism permits a daytime illumination either direct or diffuse, depending on the orientation of the blades that refract sunbeams; in case of necessity, the disposition of the blades horizontally provides an utter darkness.
All the project design develops towards the outside: even the café looks towards the cloister, which could become, as well as an external expositive area, an environment suited to socializing.
The association that manage the Gallery can also enlarge their range of action utilizing an amphitheatre situated on the backside of the area, ideal for musical and drama shows. Therefore, it would be possible to involve a new and younger public, improving the number of people interested in the Gallery's events and in a new place thought out for the needs of the entire town of Piacenza . The project has put together different artistic disciplines in a unique common space, in order to make the Gallery a new environment of socialization.
